“Well, you look downright chipper.”

“Then why do you say it like it's an accusation?”

“It probably is an accusation. Why are you so damn chipper?”

I sighed at Chris and asked him what was going on with him. He obviously was not in the greatest mood, so I figured that this new girl that he had asked to marry him was not fulfilling her part in his fantasy. I worried about him, especially because I didn't really know the girl. All he wanted to do was talk about her. Today though, he wanted to ask me how things were going with his sister. I wanted to stay out of that conversation altogether.

“I thought we weren’t going to talk about it?”

“My parents won't leave me alone about it, so I at least need to know you guys are getting along.”

Then, he told me quickly that he didn’t want to hear it, so don’t offer anything.

“Never mind, obviously I was an idiot for even asking. I don't really care how you are doing. Just don’t hurt Esmeralda, and I don’t care.”

He did care though, and I got the feeling that he couldn't handle it, so he made the right choice. It was easier if we just didn't talk about it at all. I didn't know how any conversation about being with his sister was going to end well.

“If you want to know how it’s going, you should ask her, Chris.”

“It's weird talking to her now. I don't even know what to say.”

“What to say? She is still your sister.”

“I know that. It’s just weird now.”

I wished I could make it easier for him, but I didn't know how I could. We tried to keep it as far away from Chris as much as possible, but every time we were at work, he would let it slip and that just told me that he had it on his mind quite often. It wasn't very helpful, of course, especially considering that we were trying to pretend like it wasn't happening. I knew he was at least. It was impossible to forget about it though. I didn’t want it right in his face, so I made sure that wasn't the case. I made sure that I kept it as separate as I possibly could. He was breaking the rules asking about it and complicating things further.

“Well, I know that Esmeralda has noticed you pulling back. She told me the other day that she misses her brother.”

“Was that during pillow talk?”

It was, but I wasn’t claiming that. I fully acknowledged that I had put him into a shitty position, falling for his sister.

I was about to answer, when I heard the alarm going off. It was one of those times that I actually was happy to hear the sirens going off. I was almost relieved. Too many times lately, Chris and I were getting into these conversations that I didn’t want to be a part of. I didn’t know if it was ever going to be the same between us.
